Harriet Tubman

and the Underground Railroad

This diorama was created with much love and respect for the extraordinary woman Harriet Tubman: abolitionist, conductor on the Underground Railroad, rescuer of dozens from slavery, field nurse during the Civil War, and founder of a home for the elderly.

Early photos of Tubman were used for reference while sculpting and painting her figurine (photo displayed on back of diorama), with several details included to inspire curiosity about Tubman and the work she and others did through the Underground Railroad. Why is there a lantern in the window of the house? Ms. Harriet is carrying a baby - did she actually help babies and children escape slavery? (Answer: Yes, she did!)

Other suggested books, educational videos, and learning activities available upon request.

*The diorama includes electric light features, so a nearby outlet will be required for proper viewing and display.
